WHO WE ARE

It is said that when a butterfly beats her wings, an event of dramatic proportions may occur a world away. This is what we think art and film is capable of. Ideas in motion, taking flight and inspiring change. We work from the heart with an aim to launch projects that spark discussion, educate and entertain.

butterflytyphoon pictures is made up of two partners. We are Patrick McLaughlin and Nina Sudra.

NINA SUDRA

Nina is a filmmaker working in the industry for over 25 years. She is committed to creating dialogue about social issues revolving around the multicultural experience. She has embraced her passion of filmmaking and storytelling as a powerful tool to build bridges between people of different ages and cultures. Nina has developed and created films through the National Screen Institute and the National Film Board of Canada. 

Her films have travelled the globe, been broadcast internationally and touched many lives. These works have encouraged conversations between a varied spectrum of people; from children in impoverished villages to graduate students in universities. Nina’s films have received national and international accolades and have won several awards. 

Recently Nina has directed the documentary called “Bridging the Gap” about refugee and newcomer families navigating the school system and a short narrative film shot in Cuba “Travels with Miranda” along with co-producing the documentary “The Gateway” a film about hiphop culture in Calgary.  All of these films have been nominated for the Rosie awards through the Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association. Currently she is working on the documentary “Gandhi’s Threads” about three activists who use fashion to fight their causes, inspired by the example of M.K. Gandhi & his journey of altering his clothing choices as he continued too evolve.

PATRICK McLAUGHLIN

Patrick McLaughlin is an award winning cinematographer, camera operator/ field director and writer based in Calgary, Alberta.

For the past few decades he has worked professionally as a cinematographer on features, shorts, commercials, documentaries, music videos, reality shows, concerts and corporate videos for a wide variety of broadcast and corporate clients. His client list includes CBC, CTV, NFB, Discovery, PBS, YTV, Odeon, E-One, Movie Central, Documentary Channel, A-Channel, Animal Planet, Omni, City TV, Slice, Global, The Cave, Bravo!, Much Music, SCN, Superchannel, VisionTV, Yes TV, Book TV, Moviola, APTN, CMT, SportsNet, A&E and W.

Patrick brings a vast portfolio of experience and is comfortable working in all genres and formats of motion picture. He has traveled the spectrum of the medium, from narrative to documentary, commercial to experimental, feature to short, film to 4k, and consistently brings his vibrant passion for filmmaking to every project.
